New Zealand Greenshell Mussels
Greenshell™ Mussels (Perna canaliculus) is the trade-marked name of farmed native green-lipped mussels. A New Zealand delicacy for centuries, commercial farming of this species began over 40 years ago. Since then, the domestic and international demand for this product has grown dramatically. In 2006, New Zealanders consumed $43 million of farmed Greenshell™ mussels and exported a further $181 million, making this New Zealand’s biggest aquaculture business and the largest (by value) single species of seafood exported today.
All Greenshell™ mussels are grown suspended from long-lines which are supported by floats in the coastal marine environment. This is referred to as long-line culture and is regarded as the most efficient, economic and environmentally-friendly method of farming mussels. The planning and approval process for new mussel farms in New Zealand considers the farm’s potential environmental effects, its effects on fishing activities, and any possible cultural and social (including navigational and visual) effects.
Our regulations and monitoring programmes ensure Greenshell™ mussels are farmed in a sustainable manner. Regulations and monitoring, including the industry shellfish quality monitoring programmes, also ensure these mussels meet the highest standards of food safety.
New Zealand’s Greenshell™ mussel farmers and processors are also expected to comply with Aquaculture New Zealand’s Greenshell™ Mussel Industry Environmental Code of Practice.
Food Safety

The harvesting and processing of mussels is carried out in accordance with food safety standards that ensure all commercial shellfish are safe to eat in the raw state. New Zealand operates a mandatory shellfish quality assurance programme for all Greenshell™ mussel harvesting areas. This is recognised as one of the best in the world and is based on international best practice. The programme is managed by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA), in cooperation with the District Health Board Public Health Units and the shellfish industry.
Blue Ocean big tick for mussels
When it comes to being eco-friendly, New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels are right up there according to international conservation organisation Blue Ocean, which gave this shellfish one of its highest rankings.
Blue Ocean evaluates aquaculture operations based on five principal criteria: inherent operational risks, feed composition, pollution, risk to other species, and ecological effects. “New Zealand farmed green mussels rank highly in all of these categories”, says Blue Ocean CEO Carl Safina. “Green mussels filter their food out of the water and therefore do not require extra feed. They are native to New Zealand, reducing the possible impact to other native species. Overall, management of New Zealand mussel farming has been effective in minimising negative environmental impacts associated with aquaculture.”
